During the long and cold winter months here in the UK, it is inevitable that you will end up spending more time indoors and so will be using more energy with TVs on, laptops running, lights on, and the heating set high. However, with energy prices continuing to increase, this kind of behavior will lead to your domestic energy bills going up significantly in price. Do not panic though as there are certain things that you can do in order to save energy this winter. Some of these are listed below in detail.
Turn down the level on your thermostat
Having a thermostat in a room will stop the temperature in it from getting too hot. What it will do is turn on the heating up until the point that the temperature in the room reaches the level that you set and then will turn off. Once the temperature drops, it will kick back in again in order to get the temperature back up.
In order to save energy, make sure that the temperature on your thermostat is set to as low as possible - providing that the conditions remain comfortable that is. There is no need to turn up the temperature when it gets really cold outside as the house will get hot on its own.
Simply adjusting the temperature on a room thermostat by as little as a single degree can save as much £60 on energy bills over the course of a year.
Use radiator reflector panels
These are a relatively cheap and effective way of significantly reducing how much energy you use during the winter months. They are installed by fixing them to the wall behind each of the radiators throughout your home so that the heat coming off of the radiators reflects back into the room, thus making it warmer. Without these panels in place, the heat simply escapes through the wall and out of your house.
Radiator reflector panels only need to be used for radiators on external walls, but using them can save £19 a year.
Switch up your lighting
If you do not already use them, changing all of the light bulbs in your house for more energy efficient LED ones is a great way to save energy during the winter, especially given the lights will be on much more over these months. Nowadays, LED light bulbs come in lots of different fittings, sizes, and shapes so you will be able to find some that suit your own personal style.
Replacing all of the light bulbs in your property for LED ones can save you as much as £40 each year on the cost of your energy bills. Additionally, make sure that lights are not left on in rooms that you are no longer using. Doing this will save you approximately £15 over the course of a year.
