This luxury establishment is located in Summerlin, a golfing community about a 15 minute drive northwest of the Las Vegas Strip, and 20 minutes from the McCarran International Airport (the main Las Vegas airport).
I took a taxi from the Strip, where I had reviewed an earlier hotel. The idea was to take a look at a neighbouring hotel, not located on the Strip, or in Downtown, and to compare the facilities. The JW Marriott was billed as deluxe resort hotel, set in magnificent grounds, and offering a superb range of resort and spa facilities. The drive from the Stratosphere Casino Hotel took around the advertised 15 minutes, and I drove into a Spanish looking property, low-rise, situated in well prepared and maintained gardens. I was greeted at the entrance and my bags taken for later delivery to my room. Check-in was very friendly and handled quickly. Shortly after I was being dispatched to Room 4111. The wide hallways, and open layout of the hotel were impressive, and from picture like windows I could see streams and gardens and pathways, where you could take a relaxing walk, and take in the surroundings. Up to the 4th floor and Room 4111. The room opened to a very spacious bed/living room, with a great window overlooking more of the hotel's grounds. There was a king size bed (with triple sheeting), bed tables, a sofa, large arm/lounge chair, and a work desk. Phones were located on the desk, and there were two lines so you could use one for Internet access. I was advised high speed access would be available soon. There was also a phone on one of the bedside tables. There was personalised voicemail as well. There was a large wardrobe and a mini-fridge, but no mini-bar stocks, a safe, iron, and ironing board, and a cofee maker. I then went to the bathroom and established it was a disabled room, as there was an open shower, no bath, and railings all round. Whilst the room was quite serviceable I felt I should have been alerted as to the room type on check-in. However, seconds later I established a second bathroom, a conventional bathroom with a whirlpool bath tub and separate shower with a brass rain showerhead (which worked perfectly), vanities with ample space, hairdryer, bathrobes, and the usual JW Marriott guest amenties. I gathered the room doubled as a conventional room, and disabled room, however again this probably should have been made clear as the booking was for a 550 square foot suite, half of which in this case was taken up by the two bathrooms. Nonetheless the accommodation was quite satisfactory, and I left the room then to set out and explore the grounds and the hotel's facilities. There was little signage and nothing in the room to indicate where the facilities were, so I had to find my own way. I took a stroll firstly through the grounds, which were really well presented, and were obviously well looked after. I then found myslef heading down a long and wide hallway to what turned out to be a casino. I later established the casino had 1,200 slot machines and 40 gaming tables. It was doing very good business, mainly I think with local residents, rather than guests, or visitors. There was a whole range of restaurants clustered in one area. A terrific range of eating venues, including a Japanese steakhouse and Sushi Bar, a Milanese and Italian cuisine restaurant, a poolside cafe for light lunches and snacks, a traditional steak and seafood dining room, and Ceres, a great restaurant with views of a waterfall and the gardens. In the end though I selected to try J.C. Wooloughan's, an Irish Pub. The decor of this venue was excellent. Even the exterior was done as an authentic Irish pub. The pub was popular with most of the outdoor tables taken up, and quite a lot inside as well. The menu featured Irish stews, shepherd pie, Guinness pie and all sorts of other Irish favorites. I decided on the Irish stew, and whilst it took a little time in coming, it was delicious. The range of restaurants in the hotel was excellent. I did notice the casino was called Rampart Casino, so whether in fact it was operated by the hotel I don't know. Certainly there were charge-back facilities to the hotel, and whatever the management/ownership arrangements, the entire facility is quite seamless in it's presentation and operation.
I later learned the hotel has 541 guest rooms, and they are all a minimum 560 square feet, with the largest in the hotel being 2,200 square feet. There is a shuttle service that operates to and from the Strip, which is complimentary, and there is a helicopter landing pad at the property, and an outlet for Enterprise Car Rentals. There are a number of pools in the rgounds, in secluded areas, there are exercise machines, putting greens, private poolside cabanas, and 8 nearby championship golf courses. There's a 40,000 square foot spa with 36 treatment rooms for massages, facials, aromatherapy, body wraps, scrubs, sauna, steam rooms, lockers, outdoor therapy pool, whirlpools and a fitness center.
One of the major sources of business for the hotel, aside from the hotel and resort trade, is the conference market. The hotel has a huge area of conference space, with numerous breakout rooms, which can cater for small meetings, up to large conventions of over a 1,000 attendees.
In all the hotel measured up well as a deluxe resort hotel close to all the attractions of Las Vegas, but in an environment a world away.
